Little Things

Remember when you were a little kid and you made your parents a present like a necklace out of noodles or a drawing? Remember how proud you felt when they wore the necklace out in public, or they framed your drawing and hanged it up on the wall?

They didn’t need to tell you how much they loved it for you to realize that they did, or how proud they were of you for making something so beautiful. Those simple actions made you feel like the best person ever. They made you feel like you were important to them.

But do you also remember the times your parents didn’t need to speak, for you to realize that they were mad at you? Just one look was enough, and that’s when you knew you messed up.

The saying, actions speak louder than words, couldn’t be more true. But if you dive further into it, you will see that the little things you do matter more than the big actions you take.

You see, yesterday I was feeling worthless about myself because all day long I had been hearing little comments about my body that made me think I wasn’t good enough. No one had to say those exact words for me to feel that way; it was just little comments such as “you should cut your nails” and “you should fix your eyebrows” that ended pilling up making me feel bad about myself.

If someone had told me they loved me right after they made such a comment, I wouldn’t have believed it. The reason why I say this is that I would have been so hurt by the little things they said that I would’ve been blinded by them.

At that moment, what I needed was someone to be there for me. So, I did the first thing that came to my mind; I texted my best friends “I need you guys right now.” No later than five seconds, came the first response asking me if I was alright. Two seconds later my phone rang; it was my friends checking up on me. We talked for about thirty minutes before I had to leave. In that half-hour they made me feel like the most loved person in the world.

Three hours later, they called to see if I was doing better. Once again, I felt so loved and appreciated. They didn’t have to tell how much they loved and cared for me, for me to realize that they did. Those simple actions were enough proof. The little actions they did pile up and made this big beautiful gesture that healed my wounds.

You see, we say I love you so much it becomes a common thing to hear, so the only way you can truly know if someone loves you, is by the littlest things they do. Little gestures that make you smile, or make you a better person. For example, when someone is there for you when you need them the most, even if you don’t ask them. Sometimes people drop everything they are doing just because you need them. Those are little gestures that everyone remembers.

So, be true to yourself. If you mean something, such as I love you, show them that you do. Go make little things that will make them feel worthy. Because at the end of the day, they are going to remember the smallest things better than the biggest actions.
